The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has given the university a grant to implement a recycling program in the campus housing. The grant was for $45,000. The university also received a cash match and in-kind match that added another $114,500 to the fund.
This money will be used to put up six recycling stations and purchase containers for the recyclable material, a couple of trailers and a utility vehicle to haul the recyclables.
The recycling stations will not be up until mid February at the earliest. Right now,Jim Daniels, recycling coordinator for the Vanderburgh County Solid Waste District, is working on coming up with incentives to get residents to participate.
According to the university Web site, area coordinators and resident assistants will be responsible for developing collection methods. It will be up to the residents living on campus, however,to actually use the recycling stations. "Recycling will be more convenient," said Daniels. "All students have to do is put the right thing in the right container."
